We are always trying to up the game here and El Porto Fridays.  Well today we bring you…VIDEO!  Unfortunately we also bring you…1 FOOT WAVES!  It wasn’t much of a good surfing day at El Porto today.  But it sure did make it easier for us to test out the camera in the smaller surf.  [...]

Surfline called for the same conditions today as yesterday.  So Donnie and I though we’d try our longboards today to see if it made much difference.  The waves were the same – all size and no strength.  But with the longboards we were able to paddle into a bit more than yesterday and we were [...]

My Spherical Revolver made its triumphant return to the ocean today!  Unfortunately, the swell didn’t quite cooperate.  The waves were good size today, but like yesterday they just didn’t have the umph to pick us up.  The waves would roll up and look all delicious.  Donnie and I would be tempted by their siren song [...]

Today was not yesterday. The water had sand churned into it and no longer had the clarity of yore.  The water also had these disagreeable frigid patches I kept passing through.  The chop was way up on the Richter scale and the waves had dropped in size and strength.  And there were jackals swarming the [...]

It was totally awesome.  I was totally there.  The waves were still huge from the giant swell sent to Huntington courtesy of a Tahitian storm.  Many of the massive wave would just wall out, crash and blow mist up the beach. The US Open was down to the Round of 16 which meant 2 man [...]

With the shine and glory of the US Open still washing over me, I headed out to the northside of the pier in Huntington today to try and push myself to the next level.  Granted, the waves were half as high and the rip tide had ebbed off to nothing, but still…NEXT LEVEL, I SAY. [...]

My wife and I went down to watch the men’s round of 16 at the Hurley US Open yesterday.  (Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay for the women’s semis and finals, which was a bummer.)  But the waves were still going berserk and the jet skis (PWCs) were still towing competitors out to the line [...]

File this on under damned if you do, damned if you don’t – sunblock contributes to coral reef bleaching. An Italian university study published in the April issue of Environmental Health Perspectives links sunscreen to coral bleaching. Worse still, sunscreens can accumulate while moving up the food chain (just like mercury). The Italians tested effects [...]

The was not the 4-7 we were hoping for.  For the most part the waves were 3-5, which would have been nice on a normal day. But because the forecast for huge surf the line up was super crowded and every wave was a scrapfest.  The best waves I caught were in the wee hours [...]

As I’ve said before, I think Rob Machado is becoming a kind of mystic guru of surfing.  One day, surfers will seek him out at secret surf spots for nuggets of surf wisdom.  He’s not surfing on the world circuit anymore, but he does show up as select contests.  Today in his heat, he really [...]

The last heat in the Round of 96 was definitely a stacked affair.  Mick Fanning, Rob Machado, Brent Reilly and Owen Wright in the same heat and only two guys can move on.  When all was said and done, it was Mick Fanning who took first and Rob Machado who slid into second.  But based [...]

There was a lull right at the beginning of the heat.  Each surfer had one waves and there there was a good 5-10 minutes of waiting.  It was starting to look like the biggest second wave was going to take the heat.  But then the swell rolled in and Kelly Slater exploded with a 9.3.  [...]

The swell is still picking up for sure.  Not only were the waves a bit bigger today, but they were stronger too.  Also the rip from the south, famous in Huntington, is back causing some more texture in the water. The first wave I went for jacked up pretty steep.  I should have pulled out, [...]

Taylor Knox making a good showing in his heat during the Round of 96.  But it was Spain’s Gony Zubizarretta who would attain first place in this heat.  But Knox clearly dominated the show both in and out of the water with is mowhawk and sweet ‘stache.  Bikini-clad chickies besieged him upon exiting the water [...]

The lulls between sets are still excruciating at times, but the wave size is really starting to pick up.  Lots of 4s and 5s out there for the surfers to really cut loose on.  Stephanie Gilmore scored an 8.6 on a nice overhead wave.  She secured first place with that wave alone.  Jessi Miley-Dyer and [...]
